SCAFFOLDING
An ephemeral and modular architecture, SCAFFOLDING materializes in the Rocinha favela. An environment characterized by its density and chaos, the result of disorderly self-construction. Its arrangement parallel to the contour lines provides a unique panoramic view of Rocinha.
With the purpose of counteracting the shortage of free areas in the favela, SCAFFOLDING creates not only a practical solution to the limitation of space, but also new public and meeting spaces. Contributing to the strengthening of the community in Rocinha.
To achieve this, a modular structure is conceived consisting of two types of supports, one of 15 meters and another of 7.5 meters, which are assembled
to form a 4 by 4 meter grid, with variable depth. These cubic spaces, on certain occasions, are subdivided, creating more compact spaces 2 meters high, thus generating a system reminiscent of scaffolding.
The assembly of the supports allows for simple assembly and disassembly, where the pieces interlock to offer various spatial configurations. Accessibility to the infrastructure is achieved through lifting platforms, and once inside, the connection between the different levels is established through open-air stairs.
To strengthen the robustness of the system, steel tensioners are implemented to reinforce the structure. These tensioners provide additional strength and structural stability, allowing it to reach 40 m in height.
At the same time, they make it possible to hang a series of habitable capsules with variable functions, providing closed spaces such as: reading places, places to eat, have a coffee, as well as private study or rest rooms. The arrangement of these capsules is versatile, adapting to the specific configuration of the spaces.
SCAFFOLDING a scaffolding system that generates a modular and ephemeral structure. Allowing the creation of outdoor spaces that house closed, more private or meeting areas inside, in a balance between the public and the intimate. SCAFFOLDING A vertical extension of the labyrinthine and heterogeneous spaces of the Rocinha favela.
