WHEREISHOMEWHENEVERYTHINGFAILS
Developed for the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid, the project "Where is home when everything fails" was created as part of the UPM ETSAM CoLab studio titled "The City in the House / The House in the City: Zombie Buildings, Mutant Interiors, Latent Infrastructures". The architectural proposal responds to a scenario of urban obsolescence by focusing heavily on core concepts of post-domesticity, circularity, biodiversity, and industrialization to create a self-sufficient home when traditional systems fail, the project proposes a comprehensive twelve-step transformation of the existing institutional site into an autonomous ecosystem. This process begins with analyzing the pre-existing conditions, dismantling and carefully storing existing installations, reducing the concrete footprint to renature the ground, and recovering materials from the obsolete buildings. The new complex then grows using metallic frameworks designed to produce food on-site, capture, treat, and store water, and generate renewable energy, ultimately creating seamlessly interconnected spaces for sleeping, working, and living. Breaking down traditional housing into specialized communal and private areas, the architecture provides robust, industrialized systems to sustain a community of up to 210 people. The residents are housed in 35 residential capsules, each designed to accommodate between three and six people. Intensive food production is deeply integrated into the daily living space through 45 vertical gardens, seven greenhouses reaching twelve meters in height, extensive open crop gardens, and ten designated fruit tree zones. Essential resource management is handled by ten hybrid water towers and observatories that reach up to twenty meters high. Furthermore, domestic tasks are collectivized to ensure survival and space efficiency, featuring communal bathhouses and five community kitchens attached to plant nurseries, each capable of serving groups of 30 to 40 people. A complex network of vertical and horizontal pathways connects all these living, working, and agricultural hubs into a fully functioning, resilient ecosystem.
