Cocoon & 40 Degrees
Two projects inspired by Bosch and his The Garden of Earthly Delight ́s hell.
Cocoon is generated in a creative process that generates space. Firstly, I designed a collage with a figure of the painting, using repetition in a geometrical order. This lead me to a model, bringing the previous order to three-dimensional space. This way, there is a logical law that generates the project and allows it to grow.
Now, we place our idea into context, a prison in Peniche ́s fort. I took the decision of placing my model inside a pre-existing cave in order to reflect the feeling of isolation and seclusion, and use the zenith light. This fluid space is generated by three different modules: Concave, convex and the union of both. Each one is a bedroom in minimal measures.
The second project, 40 Degrees, starts with an abandoned cargo ship, a structured empty shell that will be the home of our project. I placed this project in Berlanga ́s islands near Peniche, as it is an amazing place for divers. With the aim of bringing architecture to this submarine world I placed my ship on a cliff forming a 40 Degrees’ angle. This allows us to watch the landscape from three different points of view.
It is accessible from the ground and it leads us to a cantilever above the waves. A long stair takes us through different polyvalent spaces limited by horizontal platforms.
Also, we can get into the sea lit by a surround blue light because of the water. At the deepest point we can contemplate marine fauna. The old cockpit is enabled to form a system of cameras, similar to a submarine ́s, which, when filled with water, allows divers to enter the sea.
Horizontal platforms and ship ́s structure itself dialogue and give rhythm to the construction.
This way, an abandoned boat turns into a multidisciplinary cultural space used by scuba divers and watchers of ocean ́s nature.
