DARE_TO_TRAVEL
What if a city could travel? What if its culture revolved around discovery? Would it change our perception of what a city is? And most importantly, would the city be the traveler, or would its visitors be the true wanderers?
The exercise proposes relocating Nuevo Baztán, a 300-year-old village, to the old Delicias train station in Madrid. Today, we are used to connecting with people worldwide, following their journeys through social media. However, the proposal seeks to go beyond a literal relocation, exploring the rise of these networks and their distance from the real lives of their users. Thus, I propose the development of a meeting point for travelers that transforms the urban experience.
In urban terms, the proposal disrupts any established hierarchy. Users are not permanent, and therefore the architecture must reflect this transience, challenging the notion of permanence traditionally associated with cities. The project is divided into four key points: access by road and train to the site, a main space for non-permanent housing, a social exhibition center, and a housing prototype designed to adapt to any location or environment.
To understand the whole, let's review each of these points:
The Train Station
This is one of the main access points to the complex, tasked with collecting and distributing travelers from Madrid's major stations. This organically designed complex occupies the space it requires for its function. The building’s structure is centered around its circulation. Stairs and elevators are enclosed in rigid orthogonal metal structures that, along with punctual supports, hold the building. To enhance comfort and efficiency, the building envelope reacts to the sun's position. This envelope relies on a triangulated metal structure and the communication cores for support. Inside, most spaces are independent with their own enclosures.
The main hall is not a fixed space. Its ceiling height varies depending on the flow of people visiting the other public building in the complex: the museum. In this way, culture and travel are interlinked.
The Railway Museum
To attract and inform all types of travelers, the old railway museum is expanded on its southern facade. Although the design allows for linear circulation, the placement of entrances offers multiple routes, adapting to different visitor flows. Inside, spaces follow a scheme similar to the station but with two key elements: the auditorium and interactive exhibitions. The auditorium, designed for cinema, theater, or conferences, has its own structure and enclosure, allowing greater flexibility in use.
The Amoeba Housing
This type of housing deconstructs traditional housing, distributed "parasitically" around the project without interfering with the main program as it is elevated several meters above street level. This separation from the ground allows adaptation to various contexts, encouraging user exploration in search of new places to inhabit. It lacks conventional doors and walls, using height differences to separate spaces. Its structure employs 3D printing systems already used in the United States.
Non-Permanent Housing
In this part of the project, the architect’s role is minimal. Points for light and water, along with a simple metallic structural base, are provided. Users then temporarily colonize the space, creating a constantly changing environment that perfectly encapsulates the project's main idea.
