Cementos Rezola started 150 years ago in Añorga, San Sebastián, as a benchmark for the progressive boom in the cement manufacturing, converting the industrial environment into an urban identity. However, the former fertile extraction quarries are now converted into mere stopes for the storage of material produced, establishing a dying industrial context in line with the neighbour technological growing area of Miramón. The articulation of these two areas is considered highly necessary, through the reactivation of a focal point materialized in a link of connections between this industrial heritage and the present growing innovation, taking the eastern edge of the quarry fold as the action point.

A primordial premise is assumed: recovering that identity essence deteriorated by the progressive loss of industrial roots in the Donostian area, and outlining the programmatic condition by the creation of a referential centre for cement research. The study of that identity essence is carried out through an analytical reading of the interlacing of organic and inorganic strata around Añorga, according to the guidelines for its implementation on the context and the applied theoretical categorization.

Understanding the environment spatial arrangement as an entanglement and not a stacking, the activation element is introduced in a cross direction by materializing the layout of the artificial piece in a tower conceived not as a succession of strata but as an architectural artefact of reaction with the context to break through and enter inside the own element. The material-conceptual intersection between the natural and the artificial will activate three reaction mechanisms configuring the spatial scopes of the CREASED, the SCRAPED and the FRAGMENTED as an answer to the management and continuous dialogue of the element with its stratified context.

In three words: stratification, kneecap and identity; materializing a tower as a principle of activation of that interrelation between nature and artifice, past and present, industry and identity, architectural theory opposed to its action.
