Habitat in green, THE LINE
My name is Olga García, and this semester I have taken Projects 2 with the Ulargui Unit.
The assignment of the teaching unit involved designing a linear residential building located on the central boulevard of Avenida de la Gavia, in Vallecas. This avenue is 2 km long and has an oversized width relative to the vehicular traffic it supports. Each group of three classmates was responsible for designing a segment of the building, taking into account the connections between different sections and emphasizing preliminary analyses (vegetation, sunlight, flows, densities, population…).
Our project consists of a 17-story residential building. For every three floors of apartments, there is a floor dedicated to communal spaces, which include various recreational areas. Our goal was to make sure that residents didn’t have to leave the building to enjoy their leisure time.
Through a series of processes, such as collages and preliminary sketches, we decided the characteristics we wanted in our proposal: a façade skin with pointed geometries, a ground floor subtly integrated with the terrain, and a game of solids and voids. For the apartment floor plans, we designed a rectangular geometry with an inner circle, creating two apartments that share a central courtyard. These apartments were strategically distributed, resulting a building composed of two blocks, as shown in the plan, connected by a series of walkways and staircases.
The most notable aspect of our project is the façade (covering), a gardened skin. It consists of a metal net through which plants and vines grow; these plants are maintained by the building’s residents, as each terrace is equipped with a series of planters. We found it interesting to establish a direct relationship between the building and its inhabitants. For the building to function as intended, each resident must take care of their portion of the skin.
Finally, we attach the final drawings to understand the proposal: a longitudinal section, a cross section, an elevation, a floor plan of the communal spaces, an apartment floor plan, and the ground floor plan, along with key documents of the design process.
