IMPLUVIUM
We are located in Corrubedo, a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast of La Coruña. This new headquarters for the RIA Foundation dialogues more specifically with some granite ruins once dedicated to salting.
After seeing what pre-exists there, and understanding the environment, the proposal arises. We are in Galicia, where rainfall is frequent, so the roofs will become very important, configuring the project as an impluvium, an impluvium is a word of roman origin that refers to the placement of sloping roofs, so that rainwater is poured to a central space.
The compact and heavy granite masonry remains to protect a new architecture, which will always develop under the idea of simplicity. As in the case of the roofs, which protect in a delicate way, conveying a sense of lightness, of not wanting to impose on what is there. This is linked to the way of life of the people there, a living in a direct dialogue with that free surrounding, without elements that interfere.
The program was created following a 6x6m modulation of a metallic structure that is attached to the stone walls. It consists of an office area, classrooms and workshops, an area dedicated to exhibitions, conferences and meeting space, kitchen, dining room and library, and 6 accommodations. The four volumes are connected by a light footbridge and are developed in a single height, adapting to the domestic and spontaneous scale of the village.
To maintain this privileged connection with the sea, the project has eyes, each one unique. Their mission? To be attentive and open to the waves. Waves that convey strength and inspiration.
Therefore, in the accommodations, these eyes are generators of a completely free space, a space for reflection and creation. This contrasts with the compactness of a piece of furniture equipped with everything necessary for a stay there. The roofs taper at their edges to transmit a greater lightness, and the materials are left visible, highlighting the function of each one and the constructive simplicity.
The idea is to be, but not to impose or overcome, but to dialogue, coexist and learn from this unique environment, listening to what nature and the past have to say.
