Inhabit Aleppo
The project is developed in the ancient city of Aleppo, Syria. Homes are created by reinterpreting the patio house, stacking them vertically. A series of other uses fill the lower levels, sewing the building with the social and economic structure of the souk.
The course is based on a video as an introductory exercise. We are interested in an alternative fabric, in contrast to planned urbanism. A prototype in the form of a tower is proposed as architecture of conditioning, generating new hierarchies. These elements condensed vertically are spread through the area as energy sources
The video is followed by an analysis of the old city of Aleppo. The preservation of the socioeconomic structure of the historic center, linked to the life of the souk, is taken into account for the project. It is necessary to build houses that give asylum to the merchants in order to reactivate the market. On the other hand, it is important to introduce women in the reconstruction of the souk. The project proposes the creation of resting areas linked to the flow of the market, where both men and women can participate in the social life of the public space. Other equipment can be kindergartens, public toilets and laundry. An establishment for tea and conversation is added to the public space generated. These new uses are implemented in the existing structure of the souk.
The idea of a tower is incorporated into the territorial scale of the project. These elements generate different paths towards new public spaces. They have an energy function, lighting the streets and supplying electricity.
