INHABITING THE INDUSTRIAL
The project addresses the rehabilitation of the former Parque Móvil del Estado in Chamberí through a mixed-use program that combines mobility, housing, and education, reinterpreting its original industrial character. The system of helical ramps and their use as a car park are preserved, maintaining the existing structural logic. On the exposed concrete structure of the former parking building, a residential complex is developed, consisting of four housing blocks and a student residence, which grow vertically and enhance the original structure as the support for the new program.
The intervention is completed by a unified facade resolved through a large copper grid with movable shutters, which adds depth, fragments the scale of the complex, and reinforces its verticality. This system of shutters acts as a climatic protection, regulating solar exposure while allowing filtered daylight to enter, thereby improving interior comfort.
The housing units are organized through duplex typologies interwoven in section, inspired by the Big Ten system of the Casablanca Building, generating greater spatial richness and improving natural lighting and ventilation conditions. Access is provided via a shared lateral corridor, with vertical circulation concentrated in cores located at the ends of the blocks, reinforcing the collective character of the complex. The student residence maintains the same exterior compositional logic, while its interior adapts to a specific program through rooms organized around an equipped wall. A central relational space, expressed as a diagonal in section, articulates the building and acts as a meeting place.
Within the truss hall, a vocational training program focused on fashion and interior design is implemented, taking advantage of the large-scale space and abundant natural light. Classrooms are arranged transversely and set back, generating a sequence of diverse spaces and a peripheral corridor. The existing basement levels are reused to accommodate shared functions such as a cafeteria, a library, and a multipurpose space with a runway for fashion shows, while equipped walls along the longitudinal facades concentrate access points and service elements.
