memorial
I want to remember one of the most tragic episodes in Spanish history that has been forgotten. What I am talking about are the civil war fighting in the University City.
This project began with a program to carry out a research ecosystem in a field annexed to the School of Agronomists. When investigating a little about the past of that place, I discovered that it coincides with the front lines, also corresponding to the no one’s land of no one that separated both sides.
I decided to inquire about the trenches drawn in our research area, so recall the past from themt. Through experimentation I was using his form for the development of my project, looking for an evocative spatiality. In the final proposal, the trenches lines are manifested outside by means of sinuous pavement lines and underground spaces with suggestive zenithal lighting where the program takes place.
Although everything was buried, there are still some remains of that time. Among those vestiges I have found shrapnel material, impacts of bullets in buildings and, in addition, very close to the our working place, there is a large crater produced by the blasting of a mine. When approaching it one can realize the magnitude of that contest.
The main core of the project is made up of a research ecosystem dedicated to the study and treatment of historical events, where there is a historical archive, meeting places and a conference room
From this nucleus they start some galleries that provide exhibition spaces that are inspired by the shape of the shooter's wells. These spaces lead, finally, to the crater of the mine, concluding the walk in a importan trace of that warlike confrontation.
All this is compiled in a physical material consisting of 6 small notebooks separated by themes, along with a larger notebook with a deeper inquiry, and a model.
The peculiar location of the proposal allows the project to provide historical values related to the Spanish Civil War whose consequences still continue, so that its memory must lead to the rejection of violent conflict resolution routes.
The incorporation to the project of references to the trenches of both sides allows the generation of evocative spaces of singular illumination, which confer in turn values of reconciliation and tolerance.
