PROFIDÉN
PROFIDÉN explores the transformation of a fragmented urban area shaped by large-scale infrastructures in the northern part of Madrid. The project focuses on the former Profidén Laboratories, designed by Corrales and Molezún, understood as a key architectural element with the potential to reconnect isolated urban territories within the future development of Madrid Nuevo Norte.
The proposal operates across three scales: urban, architectural and programmatic. At the urban scale, a new pedestrian bridge connects the future Chamartín Park with the Profidén site and the surrounding developments. Rather than acting only as a crossing, the bridge is conceived as a connective element that improves pedestrian continuity across infrastructures and reinforces the presence of the existing building when perceived from movement along the nearby highway.
At the architectural and programmatic scale, the Profidén building is rehabilitated and transformed into a university facility. The intervention opens the original structure and reorganises it through a system of interconnected staircases that clarify circulation and structure the internal flows. The main auditoriums are located underground, freeing the ground floor and allowing it to connect directly with the exterior through an open stepped plaza. Programmes are arranged vertically according to their use: the industrial hall accommodates workshops, classrooms and a large shared project space, while the longitudinal volume contains laboratories, faculty offices and a library. The intervention respects the horizontal character of the original building and adapts the façade to the new spatial layout.
A new residential tower is added as a transitional element between the existing high-rise buildings and the towers of Sanchinarro. Organised as two vertical volumes over a shared base, the tower combines individual and collective housing types supported by shared spaces that reduce private areas and encourage communal living. Public and semi-public programmes—such as exhibition spaces, coworking areas, cultural facilities and rooftop viewpoints—activate the complex and reinforce its role within the city.
Overall, PROFIDÉN transforms an infrastructural enclave into an active urban node by combining the rehabilitation of modern heritage with new architecture and improved public connectivity within the evolving framework of Madrid Nuevo Norte.
