Sculpted Path: thermal journey
The project consists of a building in which through a conceptual process of emptying, taking as a reference the works of Eduardo Chillida, both his sculptures and paintings and his emblematic work on the mountain of Tindaya, it was possible to generate a route formed by a succession of different spaces.
Prior to the tour are the server spaces: the lobby and the changing rooms that lead to the beginning of it: two filters. A filter that allows a first contact with the water and takes the form of an elongated relaxing space enveloped in steam and a second filter with large showers. Thus, both favor the proper initiation of the tour.
This tour is divided into three stages, a first one of warm water where there is a progressive increase in temperature, followed by one of hot water where the maximum temperature of 40º is reached, culminating in a thermal shock when entering the last stage of the main tour: the cold water spaces.
Finally, the tour ends in the outdoor pool, from which you enter the changing rooms to leave the building.
Water is what orders and organizes the project, with three different levels. A first level at elevation 1'25 along the main path, a second level at elevation -5 in the outdoor pool and a third level at elevation 0 in the sauna and massage areas, which are accessed through the main path.
After successive variations, a suitable arrangement of the openings was achieved in order to achieve different heights of water and narrow, dark and mysterious transition spaces, as well as large, shady spaces pierced by beams of light thanks to the incorporation of skylights that adapt different orientations in order to create a changing experience that depends on the position of the sun.
These hot springs have three families of skylights.
The warm water course has several medium-sized skylights whose orientations allow light to reflect off the water and create light effects on the walls. They are also located in such a way as to negate the transition spaces, preventing them from being illuminated and losing their mystery.
The hot water course has a large number of small skylights with the intention of generating abundant beams of solid light.
Finally, in the cold water course there are some large skylights to suggest calm and thus emphasize the thermal shock.
Parallel to this, along the entire route there are large patios with the aim of obtaining greater ventilation and illumination.
On the other hand, the relationship with the environment is achieved through the introduction of large platforms that relate the building with both the great mountain and the river. In addition, these staircases are also carried out on the mountain.
Moreover, these are also made on a smaller scale in order to provide privacy by avoiding visual contact between the different people passing through the hot springs.
This project manages to create a changing space by creating a path that transforms with each step and offers a unique experience that adapts to the passage of the sun and time.
In addition, this project proposes a different way of inhabiting, in the interstices of a large mass as if it were inhabiting a sculpture by Chillida.
