Weightless
“yo amo los mundos sutiles,
ingrávidos y gentiles,
como pompas de jabón.”
This verses from Antonio Machado's 220 poem sum up the motto of my project.
On the basis of some utopian works from Archigram such us the Instant City or José Miguel de Prada Poole's "Arquitectura efímera de las pompas de jabón" I decided to create a doubled Central Park in the sky, supported by zeppelins to be moved wherever.
But what would happen if the building holds up by himself?
This question started a new phase in the project. I started investigating and I realized this wasn't a crazy idea. I found out that Luis Calleja had done that in his project Clouds.
Our duplicated Central Park turned into a combination of cylinders full of oxygen and helium that allowed the construction to float but also generated spaces fit to live in. We erected 5 buildings with an area of 1/5 of Central Park's original one, placed in the Empire State's needle, Rockefeller Plaza, United Nations Plaza, World Trade Center and Grand Central Station.
I've decided to describe to of the 5 options that represent to different situations.
Starting with the Empire State one we find the "Cloud's Park".
Taking the skyscraper’s needle, used in the past to secure airships, we create a fasten platform that takes us to the doubled park entrance. We start a descending tour through different areas that emulate the original Central Park program and that are connected with inflatable ramps and stairs.
However, in Rockefeller Plaza we appreciate how our building is in contact with the others and dialogues with Manhattan. The construction, inspired in San Patrick’s needle, permits us to make an ascending tour through a balcony and some gardens but also, we find an auditory and an ice-skating rink as the one we've got in Central Park.
To sum up, as Truman Capote doubled Audrey Hepburn's personality in Breakfast in Tiffany’s, ours have not only duplicated Central Park but have made an innovative and attractive construction.
