Wet Hot Chilly Market I
This project has been developed together with Alberto Santos.
Based on thermodynamics, Wet Hot Chilly Market is positioned as an architectural protocol for a distant future.
Central Market
Iloilo, Philippines
Year 2022
Temperature: 26.4ºC
Relative humidity: 80%.
The central market is one of the most socially active places in the city. After studying and generating a series of temporal, economic and social layers, tangible and intangible realities happening simultaneously in the place, the basis of our project is established.
As a long-term urban strategy, the rising sea level is analysed, penetrating areas further and further away from the coast. It is introduced as a future element for the project, establishing a design protocol for the market and its immediate surroundings, which will allow the city to be colonised and accommodate different uses and functions.
Understanding the project as a complex process rather than a final result, we produce a cartography of thermodynamic plans, from which we advance through recursive and design processes towards the formalisation of the interior spaces of the market.
Wet Hot Chilly Market is made up of a set of material atmospheres in its interior with very specific characteristics of temperature and relative humidity. These spaces generate an internal landscape of temperatures, with differentiated activities and dimensions, which will define the paradigm of post-carbon architecture.
The physical mechanism to achieve this is the prototype developed which, by generating a closed flow of water, cools or heats the spaces according to the programme and makes it possible to design these thermal transitions. Its punctual, linear or group layout allows for a wide variety of spatial situations, functioning as an envelope for these atmospheres.
Spaces are no longer designed exclusively through the quantification of their purposes, but through their atmospheric qualification.
The ground level is raised in different areas of the market to allow water to enter when the sea level rises in the future, completely changing the way of accessing the interior of the market. A whole network of water installations is deployed in the false ceiling, technifying the ground floor and creating different environments and programmes depending on hygrometric conditions.
The vertical connections to the upper levels are made in the supports that hold up the structure and horizontal flows are generated along the different floors by means of walkways that link both similar and totally opposite environments.
Wet Hot Chilly Market is not understood as an isolated piece but as matter and energy interacting with the environment and its changing boundary conditions, generating an ecosystem in which a series of thermodynamic relationships occur at different scales.
