Folding Palace
ORDER_
“In its European business consolidation project, Universal Music Group finances the capacity increase of the Wizink Center (Palacio de Deportes de Madrid), remaining all rights reserved”
Folding Palace is the result of a three month investigation on how to double the capacity of an indoor sporting arena. The research develops hypothesis on both user and evacuation levels, looking for non-conventional representation methods capable of document the evacuation system failures.
The project arises from the need of an actualisation of this overdimensioned evacuation system and is focused on gaining the maximum amount of surface in plan in order to make it passable, deleting the existing stretches of escalators and consequently moving uses to expansible modules in the corners as well as installing folding bridges that directly connects high levels to +0.00 height. The improvement of the security system passes through the incorporation of more effective animal means, morphing the “palace” into both a horse stable and a pigpen while there are no scheduled performances.
MODELS_
The research on evacuation systems “in height is carried out by the creation of two interactive models capable of design and dimension the new evacuation system and its light structure. MODEL01 is a flow particle model with various inputs that allows for determining the amount and speed of people the in the system, the geometry of the route and the distance covered. MODEL02 is an structural algorithm personally programmed based on Airbus A380 wing ribs functioning, that allows to design totally optimized structures capable of covering the range of structural situations found.
