Oasis // Bercimuel
Oasis starts as a reflection exercise on the process of desertification in the villages of the known “Empty Spain”. The study finds possible solutions in the towns itself, where geological, hydric and geographical characteristics can be used at their maximum potential to avoid this phenomenon in the future.
Bercimuel, a forgotten town in the interior of Spain (Segovia), is transformed into a field of experimentation. The proposal collects and process water from the present seasonal floods and distributes it throughout the year so an artificial oasis can begin, a green island in the future arid landscape.
The intervention is achieved by different Artefacts, which are in charge of generating this green landscape embedded in Bercimuel. Structures with condensing textiles are distributed according to wind directions to flood the space with humidity, modifying the climate within.
A second phase, still open to possibilities, arrises from the question, “What happens to a village that it’s now an oasis?” In which different Architectures related to new economies emerge. From flocks of sheep that reach the evergreen meadows and the industry that entails to the new space for research on water, plants and fight against desertification.
The proposal also doesn’t want to obviate that its architecture and spaces are a cumulous of memories, that what is designed comes from the reinterpretation of what it’s already seen. Oasis is configured by this imaginary constructed by other architectures, films, poetry; and makes constant reference to them.
