SISTEMA DE ADAPTACIÓN DE EDIFICIOS DE LA GRAN VIA A UNA SOCIEDAD CAMBIANTE (S.A.E.G.V.S.C)

The project is based on the urban analysis of Gran Via. It shows that most uses of the buildings remain the same after a hundred years of history. Some of them have not changed, but have been distributed, leaving most of the transformations in the mere creation of simple shopping malls. That is why the aim of the project is to transform the Palacio de la Musica (designed by Secundino Zuazo in 1926). The exercise consists in reflecting on the “urbanism of the spectacle”, investigating how the ruins arrived at us can become spaces of necessary opportunity, and regeneration of urban life.

The project proposes the creation of a resilient building, which adapts to the changes of the city and society, accommodating in its interior all kind of programs that are necessary for the inhabitants not only from the neighborhood, but from the city, through of the use of a series of plug-ins. It is about introducing in the preexistence, devices that act as organizing elements of the space and at the same time allow a great variability of programs in its interior depending on the needs of society.

_PLUG-IN#1: THE WALL: vertical element that runs along the perimeter of the façade, of light and permeable materiality and that allows variability of actions on different floors at the same time

_PLUG-IN#2: THE BOX: overlayed element consisting of two parts: the large space and an associated service band according to the needs of the space. Its big height allows programs that need a large space. Internal subdivisions can be made with mobile textile elements

_PLUG-IN#3: THE PREEXISTANCE: The stands are the representative pre-existing element of the building, which is cleaned of any ornament and it is provided to the user who inhabits it according to their needs

_PLUG-IN#4: THE OPEN SPACE: Open spaces are left open with vegetation for the enjoyment and relaxation of the user like a green space in the center of the city.

_PLUG-IN#5: CONNECTIONS: It is necessary to interconnect all spaces due to possible future variability of the building. There will be three vertical connection axes coinciding with the new structure of the building.

Against the demolition as an immediate response, building surgery operations are necessary. The project therefore becomes the architecture experimentation laboratory where to propose, negotiate and confront formal and programmatic transformations in abandoned buildings.
